2010 Snapshot:
- Jamaica Hospital is a 424-bed, not-for-profit teaching hospital.
- Nearly 128,000 patients were treated in JHMC’s Emergency Department, accounting for 80% of the hospital’s admissions.
- 330,000 patients were seen in JHMC’s Ambulatory Care Centers and 28,000 patients were treated by the Dental Center.
- 36,000 women were seen in the Women’s Health Center, while 2,700 deliveries were performed at Jamaica Hospital.
- The Department of Orthopedic Surgery recently expanded and currently boasts a comprehensive total joint replacement program.
- In the Winter, the hospital opened a four-bed hospice unit to provide collaborative care to patients with less than two weeks to live.
- The Department of Anesthesia began a Pain Management Practice, which utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to pain management while providing comprehensive evaluations and treatment options to patients suffering from chronic pain.
- Jamaica Hospital was established in 1891, in a rented, four-bedroom home in Jamaica, Queens. The hospital currently serves a population greater than 1.2 million in Queens and eastern Brooklyn.
- JHMC has an on-site Ambulatory Care Center that provides a full range of services, including pediatrics, internal medicine, family practice, obstetrics, gynecology, podiatry, surgery, gastroenterology, dermatology, neurology, orthopedics, dental, radiology, social services, WIC, mental health, nutrition, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiology, and urology. In addition, the onsite ACC boasts a Sleep clinic, where sleep disorders in adults and children are evaluated and treated. JHMC also has a network of Ambulatory Care Centers, known as MediSys Family Health Centers, located throughout Queens.
- The hospital’s Emergency Department— a Level I Trauma Center and Stroke Center – is one of the busiest in New York and the only in South Queens. The department also has a Fast Track Center and Chest Pain Center, a Queens first. The hospital also operates a separate and kid-friendly Pediatric Emergency Department. The facility is also a 911 receiving hospital, a NYS designated stroke center, and a NYC Hypothermia/Cardiac Destination Facility.
- The Department of Radiology at JHMC uses some of the latest technologies, including a MRI and 64-slice CT scanner, and offers a wide variety of state-of-the-art diagnostic and specialty services, including ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopic procedures, diagnostic radiology, vascular laboratory, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology.
- JHMC is one of the few hospitals in Queens offering mental health programs to the community through its Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. The department offers inpatient and outpatient services and provides consultation and liaison services, as well as child and adolescent services. The hospital also has a dedicated psychiatric Emergency Department.
- The Department of Pediatrics at JHMC offers a wide variety of medical and surgical subspecialty services in modern facilities for children from birth through adolescence. The department consists of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a 10-bed nursery, and a children’s playroom.
- The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers acute in-patient services in two rehabilitation units—“The Brady Institute,” a nationally recognized traumatic brain injury & coma recovery unit, and the Margaret T. Palomino Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, a unit that specializes in treating individuals with acute physical disabilities. The department also offers out-patient rehabilitation services.
- JHMC’s Palliative Care Consultation Program provides a variety of services to individuals facing life threatening illnesses and their families, including medicine and surgery, pastoral care, pharmacy, dietary, physical and occupational therapy, anesthesia, and social work.
- The Cardiology Department at JHMC boasts a cardiac catheterization laboratory, as well as a full non-invasive laboratory. The department also has an established arrhythmia service, offers elective angioplasty, and is suited to perform a wide variety of testing, including: electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, stress tests, and pacemaker evaluation, to name a few.
- JHMC’s Trump Pavilion for Adult Nursing and Rehabilitation is a modern 224-bed facility that provides sub acute rehabilitation and skilled nursing care.
