Brady Institute was opened in 1994, becoming one of the
first centers for
brain injury in NYC. The institute was named after James
Brady and his wife Sara. Mr. Brady, White House Press
Secretary for Ronald Reagan,
suffered a severe brain injury in 1981 after receiving a gunshot
wound to the head. Mr. Brady continued his job at the White
House even after his injury, and exemplifies the kind of recovery
the Brady Institute hopes to inspire.
Twenty beds make up
the
Institute, with sixteen allocated to brain injury recovery,
and the other four for coma recovery, the first available
beds
in the region.
Creating special beds for coma recovery patients was a visionary
move by the Brady Institute. The
belief was that people in
comas needed special care to increase their chances of coming
out of the coma and making a recovery. The Brady Institute
is also one of the rare centers that will accept a Ranchos
Level One coma patient, which is defined as a patient with
no response to light, touch, or sound. Most hospitals will
take only a Level Three patient or higher, which mandates
localized responses to stimuli. These patients receive very
aggressive coma stimulation, which has proven to be highly
successful.
Nearly seventy percent of Brady Institute patients return
to the community after their treatment, and are provided
with
follow-up outpatient rehabilitation services. The outpatient
system treats 200-250 patients a day.
The Brady Residence
is a state funded sub acute unit that houses six individuals
that need special treatment not available through traditional
outpatient
rehabilitation.
A Stibular Rehabilitation Program is also
available within our rehabilitation services, to help
patients regain stability on their feet.
This is a new program to New York and addresses one of
the serious and common problems facing recovering patients.
Jamaica Hospital offers one of the premier facilities for
rehabilitative services 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
and accepts patient referrals from all over the country. It
has gained national recognition for its state-of-the-art care
and innovative treatment methods. For more information, please
