Alan R. Roth, DO, FAAFP
Chairman, Department of Family Medicine
Director Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program

Dr. Roth is a dually certified Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. He is also Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He presently serves as Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine and Director of the Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Roth’s primary goal is to develop and enrich the training experiences of physicians interested in urban Family Medicine. He has completed a Residency Program Director Fellowship with the American Academy of Family Physicians and lectures nationally on urban Family Medicine Residency training and curriculum development. His special areas of interest include cultural competency training in graduate medical education, palliative medicine, disease prevention, health promotion and procedural skills. Dr. Roth is a community minded physician who regularly mentors many of our local youth interested in becoming Family Physicians.

 

Gina M. Basello, DO
Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program
and Associate Director, Palliative Care Fellowship Program

Dr. Basello is a graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She completed her residency training at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Mount Sinai School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program, serving as Chief Resident in her final year where she achieved special recognition as a recipient of the STFM Resident Teacher Award. Her professional areas of interest include cultural competency, obesity prevention and management, Palliative Medicine and the promotion of residency training in these areas.

 

Andrea Maritato, MD
Assistant Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program
Dr. Maritato is a graduate of UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. She completed her residency training in family medicine at the Mt Sinai Family Medicine Residency at Jamaica Hospital, serving as chief resident in her final year. Andrea, with a formal teaching background and interest in inpatient medicine, serves as our program's hospitalist where she offers comprehensive training to our residents in this area focusing on the family medicine philosophy of care and emphasizing continuity of care. Her other areas of interest include women’s health and clinical research.

 

James E. Villavicencio
Administrator, Department of Family Medicine and Ambulatory Care Network
Mr. Villavicencio serves as the Administrator for Jamaica Hospital Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine as well as the institution’s extensive Ambulatory Care Network. Mr. Villavicencio is a graduate of Binghamton University and subsequently completed a Masters of Public Administration with a health care focus from Long Island University. Mr. Villavicencio maintains complete administrative responsibility for 10 primary care centers which span throughout Brooklyn and Queens and our Family Medicine Department. As a result of Mr. Villavicencio’s leadership, there have been significant improvements in the network in such areas as access to care, patient satisfaction and patient volume. Mr. Villavicencio joined the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center executive team in 1994 as an Administrative Fellow. He was the recipient of the Greater New York Hospital Association minority fellowship award in 1994. His vast experience serves as an invaluable resource for Resident education regarding the principles and practices of healthcare administration.

 

Philip Cruz, DO
Osteopathic Director
Dr. Cruz is a graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency training at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Mount Sinai School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. Subsequent to graduation, Dr. Cruz went on to complete a primary care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine and co coordinates the Sports Medicine curriculum. Dr. Cruz is also active in Osteopathic Manipulative medicine and promoting education in this area.

 

Luigi Tullo, MD
Medical Director, Family Medicine Center
Dr. Tullo is a graduate of the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Mount Sinai School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program. He was Chief Resident during his final year of residency and achieved special recognition with the STFM Resident teacher Award. Dr. Tullo has a special interest in procedural skills and is the coordinator of the community Medicine curriculum. He chairs the Family Medicine Performance Improvement Committee, working to ensure efficient high quality patient care within the context of residency education.

 

Roseann Spiotta, MD
Dr. Spiotta is a graduate of SUNY Downstate School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She joined the Department of Family Medicine after careers in Pediatric Intensive Care Nursing and General Pediatric practice. Having taught N.P.s, P.A.s, medical students and residents, Dr. Spiotta actively enhances the pediatric training available to our Family Medicine residents while adding her extensive practice management and clinical experience to the operation of our Family Medicine Center. She achieved special recognition as the first recipient of the Departmental Teaching Award in 2004.

 

Peter F. Harvey, DO, FAAFP
Dr. Harvey is a graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at Jamaica Hospital. Dr. Harvey is a Board Certified family physician who has distinguished himself in Sports Medicine and has earned his Certificate of Added Qualification. He co-coordinates the Sports Medicine curriculum and is the team physician at Archbishop Molloy High School and Christ the King High School. Dr. Harvey also adds the breadth of his private practice experience to residency education.

 

Karin Kalkstein, MD
Dr. Kalkstein received her undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University. She completed her Family Medicine Residency training at the University of Rochester. Dr. Kalkstein has received numerous awards during her training including the American Medical Women’s Association Certificate of Excellence. Karin’s professional interests are focused on total urban family medicine, immigrant and refugee health care and women’s health. She is currently the co coordinator of the Family Medicine OB/GYN curriculum.

 

Reginald Hughes, MD
Dr. Hughes graduated medical school form the University of Alabama and completed his Family Medicine training at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Mount Sinai School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program. Subsequent to residency, he went on to complete a fellowship in Obstetrics. He supervises residents during their Family Medicine Center continuity deliveries and teaches the residents both basic and advanced obstetrical techniques. Dr. Hughes is also an army reservist physician and has extensive experience in travel and international medicine.

 

David Dovnarsky, MD
Dr. Dovnarsky is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his residency training at the West Jersey-Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in New Jersey and stayed on as a faculty member at the residency, serving as Associate Program Director for many years. More recently, he was on the faculty at SUNY Stony Brook’s Family Medicine Residency Program and served as Program Director there for 2 years. He completed the Duke Family Medicine Faculty Development Workshop Series. Dr. Dovnarsky is board certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics and is the coordinator of the geriatrics curriculum.

 

Lisa Chang, D.O.
Dr. Chang is a graduate of New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency training at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center/ Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is the most recent addition to the faculty with dual board certifications from both the ABFM and AOBFP. She has special interests in OMT and women’s health.
