TEACHING CURRICULUM
Lectures and Conferences
The cornerstone of the educational process is the weekly Grand Rounds and lecture series designed to cover intensively obstetrics, gynecology, the subspecialties, and primary care. These didactic sessions are allocated as protected teaching time from 8am to 3pm each Monday. Protected teaching time means the residents are relieved of all clinical duties during that period. All residents and medical students are expected to attend these lectures.

We hold Morbidity and Mortality Conferences to review recent interesting clinical cases. These conferences are resident-run and are presented to the Department. Residents select a topic relevant to the cases presented. Residents perform a comprehensive literature search on the topic. Resources such as OVID, Medline, and Up-to-Date are available through the hospital library system; Up-to-Date was also recently purchased by the department for the residents’ use at home. Under the supervision of a faculty mentor (Nikolaos N. Kiouranakis, MD), the information is then digested, critically evaluated, and reviewed for its application for the care of the patient presented.
Research
Residents are required to participate in research during the course of their training, and are required to present at least one completed research project by the end of their PGY-4 year, to be presented at the last Grand Rounds in June. Residents get to choose their individual research mentor, who acts as a project supervisor. The resident and mentor work with our Director of Research (Emre Kayaalp, MD, PhD) and Research Committee to ensure each project is properly designed and conducted. The goal is to generate at least one manuscript that is acceptable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Simulations
We are in the process of building a dedicated suite for minimally invasive gynecologic surgery simulation.
Rotation Schedule
Night Float
The on-call schedule provides the housestaff with an opportunity to achieve an appropriate clinical experience, while still yielding time for study and leisure. All years of residency utilize a night float system for weeknight coverage. Rotation blocks are usually 4 weeks long.
