- Established in 1891 in a rented, four-bedroom home in Jamaica, Queens, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center (JHMC) today is a 387 bed, not-for-profit teaching hospital. JHMC serves a population greater than 1.2 million, in Queens and eastern Brooklyn
- JHMC has developed a comprehensive network of ambulatory care centers throughout Brooklyn and Queens known as the MediSys Family Health Care Network. Our MediSys centers treated approximately 360,000 patients last year
- MediSys Health Network includes Flushing, Jamaica, and Brookdale Hospital have been Designated as one of only 4 centers of Bioterrorism Preparedness in New York City. This positions our Network as a leader in this field
- Jamaica Hospital was the 2004 recipient of American Hospital Association “Living the Vision” award, given to hospitals that show a commitment to community health. HCIA and the Health Network selected Jamaica Hospital as one of the countries Top 100 Hospitals, based on objective, quantitative performance data in the areas of quality of care, efficiency of operations and sustainability of overall performance.
- Jamaica’s state designated Stroke Center has been established to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment for patients who have suffered a “brain attack” from arrival at the hospital to discharge
- The Hospital’ Emergency Medicine Department a level 1 Trauma Center – is one of the busiest in New York. In 2006, we treated more than 104,000 patients, which accounted for 80 percent of the hospital’s admissions. The department also has a Fast Track Center and Queens’ first Chest Pain Center. In January 2001, Jamaica Hospital opened a new Pediatric Emergency Department, four times larger than the old one
- With the addition of our new Labor, Delivery, and Recovery suites, our OB/GYN Department delivered over 2,800 babies in 2006. Our Women’s Health Center, designed to handle the growing need in the community, cares for over 40,000 women annually.
- Jamaica Hospital recently broke ground for its new state of the art Trump Pavilion for Adult Nursing and Rehabilitation. The new 226 bed facility will accommodate 40 additional beds and is scheduled to be completed in 2009
- Jamaica Hospital’s specialized services include inpatient and outpatient mental health, Psychiatric Emergency Department a Traumatic Brain Injury and Coma Recovery Unit. The Traumatic Brain Injury Unit, “The Brady Institute” established May 1996, is dedicated to Former White House Press Secretary James Brady and his wife Sarah.
- In 2002, Jamaica Hospital’s Dental Department relocated to an impressive nineteen chair, 11,000 square-feet, sate-of-the-art Dental Center. The new Dental Center provides a wide variety of services for children and adults., and treated over 28,000 patients in 200
- The Hospital has an extensive Community Outreach Department that attended more than 120 events and provided over 2,000 free medical screenings last year, including blood glucose levels, foot exams and blood pressure checks. The Department also reached thousands more with the distribution of literature about health topics and access to health services.
