Excess Medical Malpractice Insurance

The NYS Hospital Excess Liability Pool has advised that the renewal application procedure is in progress for the July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009 policy year.

As you are aware, Excess Malpractice Insurance has been mandated per the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Medical Staff Bylaws. In order to remain eligible for participation in the Excess Medical Malpractice Insurance Program, physicians/dentists must successfully complete a biennial Excess Risk Management course. You will be contacted by your current carrier by May 15, 2008 relative to a renewal application. This should be completed and forwarded to your primary hospital affiliation by June 1, 2008. To qualify you must have:

• A license to practice medicine in New York State
• An affiliation with a NYS general hospital
• An individual primary policy with limits of $1.3/$3.9 million from a carrier authorized to do business in New York
• Completed a qualified risk management program within the last two years.

If you are an employed physician/dentist and do not maintain an individual primary policy, you will not be eligible for Excess Malpractice Insurance. If you are an employed physician/dentist and are covered under the Jamaica Hospital Umbrella policy, but you also maintain an individual primary policy then you are eligible for this additional layer of insurance free of charge.
